IEEE Day is a global event to be held on the first Tuesday of October, annually. It celebrates the anniversary of the first time IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884. While the world benefits from what’s new, IEEE focuses on what’s next. IEEE Day 2015 is the 6th edition of the same.

Global celebrations connect thousands of IEEE members who together cooperate and share excitement, ideas and envisions on technologies for the future. Driven by value and passion that IEEE events and activities bring in our professional lives, as volunteers we find opportunities in such gatherings to generate ideas to benefit our communities. This is how IEEEians celebrate!

The IEEE Day team is made up of student volunteers and young professionals. Together, they collaborate and work to bring even greater and more impressive celebrations than the last four editions. A Word From IEEE Egypt Section RAS Chapter Chair

IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Egypt chapter

By: Dr. Alaa Khamis, IEEE RAS Egypt Chapter Chair

It is a pleasure for me to write this short article about IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Egypt chapter for IEEE Egypt section Newsletter. IEEE RAS Egypt chapter has been established in 2012 to become the meeting place of choice for the robotics and automation community in Egypt.

Launch event of the chapter

The specific objectives of the RAS Egypt chapter are the following:

  • Serve as an interdisciplinary forum for exchanging ideas in research and development among robotics and automation researchers in Egypt.
  • Hold a number of meetings each year which are of interest to the members and reflect applications and technical advancement in the area of robotics and automation.
  • Disseminate the robotics and automation knowledge to students, researchers and engineers through promoting and sponsoring scientific activities in the area of robotics and automation.
  • Organize a mix of educational and research workshops, symposiums, seminars, invited talks, summer schools and design competitions to raise the awareness of robotics and automation and to attract new researchers and engineers to this growing field.
  • Promote the applicability of robotics and automation to pertinent areas of industrial and commercial importance.

In order to achieve the above mentioned objectives, the chapter conducts different activities focusing on five main directions, namely, educating people on robotics and automation, outreach programs, research support, strengthening industry-academia collaboration and technology transfer as illustrated below.

These conducted activities include, but are not limited to, organizing and delivering free courses such as “How to build a real robot”, “Optimization techniques and their applications in robotics and automation” and “The Future of UAV Technology”, organizing and/or technically sponsoring international conferences such as International Conference on Engineering and Technology (ICET), International Conference on Academia Industry Collaboration (IAC) and International Conference on Circuits, Systems, Communications and Computers (CSCC), organizing and/or technically sponsoring technical competitions such as Minesweepers: Towards a Landmine-Free World, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)  Competition, Egyptian World Robotics Olympiad and The National Science and Engineering fair and organizing different seminars given by world-renowned experts in the area of robotics and automation. The chapter also created the first interactive map that contains information about different formal and informal education programs, research centres/groups and start-ups/SMEs related to robotics and automation in Egypt and other Arab countries.

Robotics and Automation Activities in Egypt

These activities have borne many fruits in raising the awareness about robotics and automation and in attracting new students, engineers and researchers to this growing field. Thanks to these activities, the IEEE RAS Egypt Chapter has been selected as the recipient of the IEEE RAS Chapter of the Year Award for 2015. The chapter is also the winner of the 2012 Chapter of the Year Award in IEEE Region 8 (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Egypt chapter has obtained these most prestigious awards for being especially engaged in humanitarian activities of national importance and for being able to put into practice the mission of IEEE, “…to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.”

IEEE Helwan Student Chapter- RAS Chapter & WIE Opening

IEEE HSC will be organizing the opening of the RAS Chapter & WIE affinity group on the 3rd of October,2015.

IEEE RAS HSC is organizing a robotics competition that aims at teaching the students the fundamentals of robotics as well as the design terminology by designing a team of 2 robots that try to cooperate with each other to perform a certain task.

The competition is to be held on April, 2015 with the participation of around 10 universities. Each university is eligible to prepare 2 teams to participate in the competition as well as spreading the idea of the competition by word of mouth. The prizes are represented in both money-wise and certification-wise.
